Since 1997, Hartert-Russell has served as the Nashville community’s premier custom builder and cabinetmaker. Working from a 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art wood shop in the heart of Music City, Hartert-Russell’s select team of artisan carpenters, installers, and designers handle every job in-house, including millwork and finishing, with superior attention to detail.

“Clients refer to us as the Navy Seals of the construction world,” co-founder Ian Hartert told Nashville Interiors Magazine. “We can plan our construction and installation to conform to our client’s needs and schedules. And our clients frequently tell us we are the rare company they continue to refer to as ‘friends’ long after a job is completed.”

Founders Ian Hartert and Kevin Russell first met as roommates at the University of Wyoming, where they worked construction jobs to earn extra money. After graduation, Ian Hartert returned to his native upstate New York where he joined a fine custom cabinet company. “That’s where I really learned the industry from estimates to drafting to building custom cabinets by hand.”

When Hartert moved to Nashville in the 1990s to help his sister, a Vanderbilt doctor, remodel her library, her colleagues were so impressed with his work that Hartert soon found himself with a steady stream of clients. “Suddenly, I had another job, then another job,” remembers Hartert. “I got so busy, I told Kevin he had to come down and join me. It was really booming here.”

Now, 30 years later, Hartert-Russell’s success has paralleled the growth of greater Nashville as they have expanded to include building and remodeling custom homes in addition to outdoor living.

“We’ve always been a unique company,” says Hartert. “As general contractors and cabinet makers, we have a deep skill set and a great love of fine carpentry. We learned the industry the old way. That’s what separates us from most builders in Nashville. There is no substitute for first-class work. It takes time and patience and planning to create something that will last generations. Whatever our clients can dream, we can make it a reality.” As Hartert Russell celebrates their 30^th anniversary in 2027, their work continues to attract partnerships with the leading architects, interior designers, and select realtors from throughout Nashville and the USA The Hartert-Russell campus also includes a showroom they share with Nashville Tile and Interiors.
